Conca di By (By Basin)

Conca di By is a plateau of verdant pasturelands lying at the foot of the Grand Combin (2,000 m) encircled by an amphitheatre of mountains. Here you distinctly feel the proximity of the over-3,000 metre peaks: Chenaille, Vélan, Grande Tête de By, Avril, Gelé and Morion.

In the past, Conca di By was inhabited tall year round the year by farmers who grew rye and wheat; today we can find remnants of the village, numerous farmsteads used for the summer transhumance and the Ru. Built in the 1400s, this irrigation channel collected and conveyed glacial melt water to the farmlands of Ollomont, Doues and Allein.

Following the Ru or the dirt track to the bottom of the basin you come to a small chapel and Farinet house where the President of the Republic, Luigi Einaudi, took refuge while fleeing to Switzerland during the Fascist period. Here, a small artificial lake built at the close of the 50s gathers stream water to feed Valpelline hydroelectric power station.
At the start of the basin, a footpath leads to Champillon mountain hut and pass, but a host of other itineraries of varying difficulty cross the basin, all of which promise enviable panoramas.
